"You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl…"
I grew up in a small town in southeast Texas. I never understood the term “comfort food” because growing up, “comfort food” was simply “food”. For as long as I can remember the idea of healthy living was a foreign concept. In my childhood home our weekly dinner menu consisted of spaghetti, chicken fried steak, mac & cheese, and any fast-food chain. The only vegetables we ever saw came straight out of a can. In grade school in the early '90s, we were taught how to balance our nutrition with something called the Nutrition Pyramid. After a quick analysis, I identified there was a lack of nutritional structure at home, and it was a major contributor to destroying my family's physical health. We also didn't realize that the foods we were consuming caused mental and behavioral issues and kindly served them up as a side dish.
The education I acquired as an adolescent on health and nutrition was mostly self- taught. Establishing a proper balance of nutrition and physical activity is key to achieving health and wellness. In my twenty’s I fell in love and followed my heart to Austin, TX. Years later, following the birth of my daughter, I met Denise, a personal trainer who has dedicated decades of her life to others in search of long-term health and wellness. She taught me how to be physically strong and that what you put into your body can ultimately affect the outcome of your mind. Being an independent student of healthy living for so long, I found comfort in the time and dedication she gave me. Her expertise in her field and her ability to educate others was impressive and that was the turning point for me. Already enrolled back in school to finish my bachelor's degree in business, I realized I had chosen the wrong major.
I wanted to immerse myself in a community of individuals that share the desire to explore innovative ways to change the narrative of individual health outcomes. Several current publications demonstrated there was exceptional work being done at The University of Texas at Austin, which was right in my own backyard. The university was working to unmask the hard truths about the rate of obesity in this country. Including a particular experiment using teenage rebellion to prevent future generations from being victimized by advertising, and food companies. Like my family and so many others had been. Inspired, I applied to The College of Education for a degree in Kinesiology with a major focus on health promotion and behavioral science.
I understood how difficult it is when you don't have access to the knowledge you need to overcome an obstacle. Until you gain access you struggle and stumble your way through, and I was tired of being a spectator of the struggle; I want to be a coach on the field. In addition to my studies at UT, I found the Health Coach Institute. At HCI I obtained certifications in health and wellness, and life coaching. Now I can use my education to pay it forward.
My husband, daughter, and I moved to the seacoast of New Hampshire in the fall of 2023 to be closer to our New England family. As a mom, wife, friend, and neighbor I had been searching for a way to make an impact in my community and throughout the world. This is it, my calling; this is how I am meant to serve the world. Jim Carrey says, "The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is," and I wholeheartedly believe it. Here is my chance; I am confident I will be an asset on your health journey.
